Draft for research-creation

Origins and inspiration

In 2022, following the organisation of the festival "taking care together",[1] I went through a state of exhaustion which, extended over several months. I had pushed myself too much, spending most time behind my computer to coordinate projects, do research, watch videos, and talk to a few friends. I rarely went out, possibly also

  • transdisciplinary initiative to make respiratory care playful[2]
  • conception of a methodology for thousands of people to converge despite their different realities/knowledge systems — key learnings on the right[3]
  • hosting the festival

Of my childhood, I have few conscious memories. I remember being bothered by some schoolmates for being a nerd, wearing glasses, not being interested in collective sport. I became a first-in-class at the end of primary school, until I felt ashame to possibly be among the bad ones at the end of secondary school.

Research proposal

A study on soma and soul

Balli F. From impoverishment to empowerment. IASC 2023. https://doi/10.5281/zenodo.7833408

Inspiration

  • awareness of mental overload/saturation following the festival / thesis
  • inner call for change reinvent myself stance of re-creation
  • therapeutic process to "unfold" including three-month retreat in Asia
  • PLAY

Aim of research

To explore how somatic practices can unfold self-consciousness / mindset.

  • understanding of body sensations (soma)
    • awareness of sensations (mapping in the body, perceptual representation, degree of finesse, natural cycles)
    • coping with sensations (for ex. aversion of blows)
  • capacity to access non-conscious memories
    • remembering dreams at waking up
    • relatedness of symptoms/hinderances with specific contexts
    • access to intergenerational/metaphysical lives

Preserving our Humanity in times of artifice. Shifting from survival to fulfilling living.

Comparative practices

  • Cave Diving[5], a sport in restricted environments that requires high self-awareness
  • Somatic Art Therapy[6], a form of psychotherapy through the arts to
  • Systema,[7] an internal martial art[8] based on free movement, relaxation and self-awareness
  • Vipassana[9], a liberation meditation approach to break free from multiplying craving and aversion to sensations
  • Dreamwork as inspired by Carl Gustav Jung[10]
  • other soma-based practices (chanting, emancipatory theatre, ...)

Research principles

Focus Approach Description
Paradigm socio-constructivist, naturalistic inquiry[11] research is based on traceable reasoning in non-artificial, subjective contexts
Ethics participatory-action-research ethics[12] the research process must actively generate benefits for the people involved
Process creation-as-research[13] knowledge emerges through iterative performance/intervention
Disciplinarity transdisciplinarity[14] knowledge production embraces complexity through a plurality of perspectives
Theoretical angle emancipatory, critical public health[15] research contributes to social justice by challenging socio-political norms that produce inequality
Methodology experiential, self, performative
Data collection illustrated notebook based on dreamwork, interoception, introception
Data analysis meta-narrative
Data interpretation
Dissemination libre/open access publications incl. research notebook freely adaptable, editable documentation released throughout the process

Theoretical assumptions / model

On Life

  • each and every living being is driven by a constructive, contributive purpose (constitution)[16]
  • the Spirit preexists and survives the physical body[17]

On Health and Disease

  • the Human being is an ecosystem where billions of living being coexist[18]
  • holistic body mind spirit[19]
  • hence possible to understand health different perspectives, which should ideally be integrated[20]
  • disease is a natural outcome of - anti-psychiatry (Thomas Szasz, Michel Foucault, Roberto Freire, ...)
  • unfinished movement resulting of shock / symptom not expressed (van der Kolk 1994)
  • imbalance in Dynamic Equilibrium[21]

Recovery / Healing

  • inhibition of tought[22]
  • psycho healing - jung
  • healing requires a shift of consciousness
  • reconsolidation of emotional (implicit) memory (Levine)
  • Scaer 2001: process memory,
  • ledoux 2005
  • immune system adequate / spontaneous / habits

Expected results

  • transdisciplinary model towards somatic fullness
  • inner world as a reflect of the environment
