Draft for research-creation

Origins

Balli F. From impoverishment to empowerment. IASC 2023. https://doi/10.5281/zenodo.7833408

Trigger

In 2022, following the organisation of the festival "taking care together",[1] I went through a state of exhaustion which extended over several months. I became aware the rhythm I had taken for years was... mental overload

  • inner call for change reinvent myself stance of re-creation
  • therapeutic process to "unfold" including three-month retreat in Asia
  • PLAY

Previous cycle

  • transdisciplinary initiative to make respiratory care playful[2]
  • conception of a methodology for thousands of people to converge despite their different realities/knowledge systems — key learnings on the right[3]

Research proposal

Aim of research

To explore how somatic practices can unfold self-consciousness / mindset.

  • understanding of body sensations (soma)
    • awareness of sensations (mapping in the body, perceptual representation, degree of finesse, natural cycles)
    • coping with sensations (for ex. aversion of blows)
  • capacity to access non-conscious memories
    • remembering dreams at waking up
    • relatedness of symptoms/hinderances with specific contexts
    • access to intergenerational/metaphysical lives

Preserving our Humanity in times of artifice. Shifting from survival to fulfilling living.

Comparative practices

  • Vipassana meditation.[4] Observing the natural breath (Ānāpānasati) and body sensations without judgement helps become aware of one's reality, and break free from craving and aversion (path to enlightenment).
  • Cave diving.[5] Being aware of the restricted environment, breath limitations (availability, gas mixes, related risks) and resulting sensations helps explore a weightless universe while preserving one's life.
  • Somatic Art Therapy.[6] Being aware of one's sensations and representing them to reactivate and traumatic memories and solve them, and breathe freely.
  • Systema martial art.[7] Using the breath and awareness to relax, and get relieved from painful sensations.[8]

Dreamwork as inspired by Carl Gustav Jung[9]

Research principles

Focus Approach Description
Paradigm socio-constructivist, naturalistic inquiry[10] research is based on traceable reasoning in non-artificial, subjective contexts
Ethics participatory-action-research ethics[11] the research process must actively generate benefits for the people involved
Process creation-as-research[12] knowledge emerges through iterative performance/intervention
Disciplinarity transdisciplinarity[13] knowledge production embraces complexity through a plurality of perspectives
Theoretical angle emancipatory, critical public health[14] research contributes to social justice by challenging socio-political norms that produce inequality
Methodology experiential, self, performative
Data collection illustrated notebook based on dreamwork, interoception, introception
Data analysis meta-narrative
Data interpretation
Dissemination libre/open access publications incl. research notebook freely adaptable, editable documentation released throughout the process

Theoretical assumptions / model

On Life

  • each and every living being is driven by a constructive, contributive purpose (constitution)[15]
  • the Spirit preexists and survives the physical body[16]

On Health and Disease

  • the Human being is an ecosystem where billions of living being coexist[17]
  • holistic body mind spirit[18]
  • hence possible to understand health different perspectives, which should ideally be integrated[19]
  • disease is a natural outcome of - anti-psychiatry (Thomas Szasz, Michel Foucault, Roberto Freire, ...)
  • unfinished movement resulting of shock / symptom not expressed (van der Kolk 1994)
  • imbalance in Dynamic Equilibrium[20]

Recovery / Healing

  • inhibition of tought[21]
  • psycho healing - jung
  • healing requires a shift of consciousness
  • reconsolidation of emotional (implicit) memory (Levine)
  • Scaer 2001: process memory,
  • ledoux 2005
  • immune system adequate / spontaneous / habits

Expected results

  • transdisciplinary model towards somatic fullness
  • inner world as a reflect of the environment
